Our customers make us grin. They own scooters for many reasons. Sometimes they think against the grain. Above all, they think creatively. And they’re passionate. We like that.

Q: Do Vespas cost more than other scooters?
A: No, and yes. It depends on the model. And, you should always compare the true cost of other scooters to the unrivaled value of a Vespa. When comparing costs, some scooters may appear less expensive, but that's before factoring in their true cost of ownership. This 'true cost of ownership' considers charges incurred over the years for maintenance, parts and service.

With Vespa you get an exceptionally well-built scooter that consistently receives top honors from the motorsports press. It’s why Vespa has been the market leader for over 70 years.

Q: What’s the difference between a Vespa, Piaggio and Aprilia scooter?
A: They’re all Italian-made scooters, manufactured by Piaggio. Vespa, Piaggio and Aprilia are brands of scooters, with Vespa the most widely recognized. Vespas are iconic, classic styled scooters with luxury in mind and decades of tradition. Piaggio scooters have modern styling and more affordable pricing, the epitome of practical indulgence. Aprilia scooters combine sports performance and urban technology. Aprilia scooters are fast and agile, often considered the first “sport scooter”.

Q: Is it hard to ride a scooter? Are there classes?
A: Whether you're just starting out on your first Vespa or you've been riding for years, riding knowledge and skills are important. Scooters are much easier to handle than traditional motorcycles. There’s no shifting. The low center of gravity makes turns smooth and easy.
But, for beginners, we like to recommend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCourse, if you want to improve your knowledge and enjoyment of riding.
To sign up for a MSF RiderCourse or request information, call 800-446-9227 or visit www.msf-usa.org. Be sure to ask the course provider if you can take the course on a Piaggio or Vespa scooter!

Q: Do I need a motorcycle license?
A: Yes, but it’s easy.
In most states, the MSF RiderCourse qualifies graduates for a motorcycle license skills test waiver and may also earn you lower insurance premiums. You’ll still need to pass the written portion of the exam to add the motorcycle endorsement to your valid driver’s license.

Visit the Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program at www.mmsp.org for Missouri approved motorcycle safety programs. Or, visit the Kansas DMV at www.dmv.org/ks-kansas/motorcycle-license.php to find approved driver education courses.

Be sure to ask the course provider if you can take the course on a Piaggio or Vespa scooter!

Q: How do I register my Vespa?
A: It’s simple to title and register your new scooter. But, you must apply for your title within 30 days of purchasing your vehicle to avoid late fees and penalties.

In Missouri, to register a newly purchased scooter, take the following items to your local Department of Revenue office:

  • A Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO); we provide you that form
  • A signed Application for Missouri Title and License, Form DOR 108. You may download this form online at www.dmv.org/mo-missouri/motorcycle-license.php
  • A paid Personal Property tax receipt from your county of residence.
  • An Odometer Disclosure Statement if the mileage is not listed on the title.
  • Proof of insurance from your vehicle insurance provider.

For titling fees and sales tax visit www.dmv.org/mo-missouri/motorcycle-license.php If you do not title the motorcycle within 30 days, there is a title penalty of $25 on the 31st day after purchase. The penalty increases another $25 for every 30 days you are late, with a maximum penalty of $200

In Kansas, registering a scooter is the same as registering an automobile, you'll need to title and register it in person. To renew your registration on a current scooter, Kansas makes the task easier by offering you the option of registering in person, by phone, by mail, or online.

To title and register a newly purchased scooter, take the following items to your county treasurer's office:

  • Properly signed and notarized manufacturer's statement of origin (MSO) or title.
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement.
  • Kansas sales tax must be paid when you apply for the title.
  • Scooters must show proof of payment of personal property taxes.
  • You must sign the Title and Registration Application.

The title fee in Kansas is $10. There may be registration fees based on the vehicle's value and where you live. If there is a lien on the title, the new title will not be issued until the liens are released. If there isn't a lien on the title, you should receive your new title within four weeks from the date of application.

You must apply for a title within 30 days of purchasing your vehicle to avoid late fees and penalties.
